Aims of Outreach Offer
- Enhancing inclusive mainstream provision, improving awareness through strengths based neuro affirming practice
- Support other settings to meet the needs of their SEN pupils.
- Improve staff skills, confidence and knowledge and ensuring professionals have the capacity to provide the right support to facilitate full access to the curriculum.
- Training
- Support, pupil observation and problem solving with school staff.
- Provide/enable high-quality, targeted time-limited and structured support.
- Support for parents/carers to meet the needs of their child/ren at home.
Sherwood Foundation School Tiered Outreach Offer
The Sherwood Foundation School tiered outreach offer has been designed to support the staff and parents of children and young people in mainstream and specialist nurseries and schools who are working with the following groups of children:
- Those with severe and profound learning difficulties, including those with physical disabilities
- Those who are neuro-divergent (Autism, ADHD)
- Those who are at risk of school refusal or exclusion
- Those whose stress behaviour is impacting their learning and access to the curriculum
Sherwood Foundation School offers the following outreach:
Universal offer
This is freely available to Sutton Local Authority to support all settings in the borough although, where this is a transdisciplinary training session there may be a cost for Cognus Therapies input. This includes:
- Universal training and workshops offered by LBS & via our website for parents
- Advice on resources and equipment - this includes supplementary packs to support SEND bids, videos on using equipment and AAC
- ‘Fishbowl’ sessions for schools to visit our setting on set dates advertised throughout the year
The above services can be provided to nurseries and schools outside of London Borough of Sutton at a cost (please see contact details below).
Targeted offer
This is freely available to Sutton Local Authority to support all settings in the borough although, where this is a transdisciplinary training session there may be a cost for Cognus Therapies input. This includes:
- Attendance at our training sessions delivered to our staff on specific areas of need / interventions offered - this list is published on our website on an annual basis
- Specific targeted support for schools at their request - this includes time with our teaching, therapy and wellbeing staff observing sessions and discussing issues specific to the needs of the setting. This includes demonstrating approaches and use of resources in practice
- Providing specific training for a specific school or center, designed around their needs e.g. inhouse/inset day training
- Working collaboratively with Sutton Local Authority and other specialist schools and centres to develop and share knowledge and expertise.
The above services can be provided to nurseries and schools outside of London Borough of Sutton at a cost (please see contact details below).
These services are limited by in house capacity.
Specialist / Bespoke offer
This is charged to Sutton Local Authority or specific schools with the aim of supporting specific staff or providing coaching and support for school staff around the needs of a specific child or group of children. Where this is a transdisciplinary aspect to this offer there may be an additional cost for Cognus Therapies input. The Sherwood Foundation School Specialist offer is costed per hour and includes:
- Providing supervision and coaching of staff in isolated or challenging job roles
- Providing assessment and advice for specific children and young people where in house knowledge and skills have been exhausted.
- Providing targeted packages of support to upskill staff around the needs of a specific child or group of children with the aim of Improving staff skills, confidence and knowledge.
The staff with the appropriate skills and knowledge will be provided once the specialist request has been made. This will be discussed and agreed in advance with the setting. Costings available on request

Fishbowl sessions
These sessions are run in collaboration with Sutton Local Authority’s ‘Ambitious for SEND’ agenda. These sessions are termly opportunities for staff/teams from other schools to visit specialist schools and centres in order to observe best practice, gain advice on new interventions and strategies and to discuss new ways of working with a child or children with SEND in their setting.
We currently offer these sessions on a termly basis on all our Campuses.

Sherwood Conference
We are excited to be launching our annual training conference next year. This will be an opportunity for professionals and parents to get together to learn new information, approaches and resources to support children and young people with complex SEND.

Training for Professionals
As part of our outreach offer we offer targeted training to nurseries, schools and other professionals. We are proud of our strengths based and relationship focused practice. All of our training aims to be person centred, trauma informed and neuroscience aligned. We offer training in the following areas
- Adaptive teaching strategies for pupils with SEND (targeted to specific needs as required)
- Adaptive environments for inclusion
- Alternative approaches to managing behaviour through the practice of Shanker Self-Reg
- Reducing restrictive practice and the need for physical intervention and seclusion
- Embedded sensory & physical strategies to support learning
- Therapeutic Listening
- Using relationship focused intervention and play to support learning
- Total communication approach, including use of aided language stimulation & robust AAC
- Natural Language Acquisition and Gestalt Language Processing
- Developing independence skills
- Using environmental adaptations and assistive technology to support excess for pupils with physical disabilities
