Relationship and Sex Education Policy Statement
At Sherwood Foundation, we understand the importance of teaching all our students, the relevant skills and knowledge they need to prepare for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences now and in their adult life. Relationship education is essential to this.
We understand our responsibility to deliver a high-quality, age-appropriate and evidence-based relationships, sex and health curriculum for all our pupils. More information on the specific content for each age group, can found in our full RSE policy.
Our relationships education is delivered through the curriculum pathway appropriate for your child, and covers areas such as:
- Establishing clear boundaries within which our students may develop confidence and appropriate behaviour
- Becoming more self-aware of their bodies
- Developing an awareness of appropriate relationships
- Encouraging students to discuss their feelings and worries
- Developing skills in language, decision making and assertiveness
- Rights of dignity, privacy and respect as individuals
- Correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies
- Developing feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
- Preparing pupils for puberty, and giving them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
- Creating a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
- Encouraging students to form their own opinions and make judgements
We believe the above learning is fundamental, in preparation for adulthood and is closely linked to keeping children / young people safe. It will be delivered in a sensitive and age appropriate way, however the school recognises that some families may wish to understand more / wish to withdraw their child from parts of the curriculum. In order to do so, please refer to the full policy which can be found on our website or contact the school directly.
